Abstract

Suicide is the most enigmatic decision taken by a person under conditions of stress. It is a major public health problem, worldwide. It has got various types of descriptive statistics depending upon the population under study. This autopsy study was aimed to analyse the trend of suicidal deaths at the largest district of the most populous state of India. The study utilised hospital records, inquest papers, information provided by the police, and the findings of the autopsy examination. It was an observational study utilizing descriptive statistics. Out of total, 17.28% of the autopsies were suicidal deaths. Majority of the victims were males 50.97% compared to the females 49.03%. Majority of victims belonged to the age group of 21-30 years followed by 31-40 years. Hanging and poisoning were the most common methods employed to commit suicide. Marital conflicts and family quarrel were the most common causes that led to suicides. It was observed that 75.85% victims were married and were Hindu 87.92%. Most of the victims belonged to a rural background and lower middle class families 40.09%. Suicide being is a major public health problem requires an effective strategy for its prevention. © 2022, Medico Legal Society. All rights reserved.
