Abstract

The author analyzes social health trends reflected in the dynamics of specific causes and classes of causes of population morbidity and mortality and certain types of legal offenses as the country was moving toward a market economy. This article contains data on the Russian Federation, its federal districts and subjects, based on information from Russian and foreign statistical sources: the Federal State Statistics Service and databases of the World Bank and the World Health Organization. The author, who interprets social health as an indicator of the degree to which society can accept changing social realities, comments that today an analysis of social health should take into account subjective personality traits that play a much greater role than before and, therefore, are important for selecting empirical indicators. Despite the steady decline of most social ills in recent years, Russia is still among the states with the highest number of social pathologies, including population mortality from homicides and suicides. At the same time, this problem to a great extent remains latent: according to various assessments, the real scale of the manifestation of social pathology is many times higher than official statistics. The author concludes that, while the comprehensive negative consequences of the "wild '90s" are being mitigated, the problem of social health persists, albeit in various forms. This means that it should be studied more closely at the level of public awareness, social perception, and behavior. © 2022, Russian Academy of Sciences. All rights reserved.
