Abstract

Reflections about death and suicide are pregnant in Senecas' philosophical works, especially in the Epistulae morales. Though clearly roman and stoic, Seneca's thought about suicide renews both the stoic doctrine and the roman tradition on the question. While pointing the rational nature of good suicide, in the stoic tradition, Seneca stresses the link between suicide, social duty and liberty and insists on the circumstancial nature of suicide. The reflections about suicide in the Letters also enlighten the ambiguous status of the reputation (fama) in Seneca's thought. © 2022 Presses Universitaires du Septentrion. All rights reserved.
