Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Transgender persons, especially adolescents, are at higher risk for suicidal behavior. As part of the SWITCH project on transgender and non-binary people, the Satisfaction with Health and Psychological Services survey examined, among other things, factors that reduce the risk of suicidal behaviour.

METHODology: 223 respondents from transgender and non-binary people living in the Czech Republic participated in the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire during December 2020.

RESULTS: One of the most important findings of the research is the statistically significant relationship between support from friends and family members (especially support from the mother) and the frequency of suicide attempts. This support reduces the number of suicide attempts by a third (friends) to almost half (mother). Respect from the helping professions is essential when seeking professional help, especially acceptance and recognition of their gender identity, respect for their preferred name, salutations, pronouns. Trust in professional help and seeking it early also reduces the risk of suicidal behaviour.

CONCLUSION: Availability of respectful professional support and support from friends and family are preventive factors. © 2022 TIGIS Spol. s.r.o.. All rights reserved.
