Abstract

Developmentally, suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) tend to significantly increase after the age of 12 years. Therefore, it is not surprising that the lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts as well as suicidal thoughts and actions among children and adolescents is considerably elevated when compared to adults. This circumstance makes it indispensable to differentiate between psychotherapeutic interventions that are appropriate for children and adolescents and those that are appropriate for adults. Basically, effective suicide preventive interventions are characterized by 1) the design of an emergency plan, 2) they immediately psychotherapeutically address suicidal experiences and behavior and 3) provide a higher frequency of treatment sessions. Along these three criteria, this article outlines specific aspects of the therapeutic relationship processes, risk assessment and crisis interventions in the psychotherapeutic treatment of children, adolescents and adults who experience suicidal thoughts and intentions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
