Abstract

OBJECTIVE was to study clinical and socio-psychological preconditions for rise of pessimistic reflections in women with nonpsychotic mental disorders aged 40-65 years.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. A continuous examination of 204 women aged 40-65 years hospitalized during a year for nonpsychotic mental disorders was conducted. Psychological examination included use of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, Stress Resistance Test, and the Scale of subjective well-being.

RESULTS. Two groups of women were distinguished depending on absence (n=118) or presence (n=86) within the last year of pessimistic reflections of various degree of frequency and severity related to oneself, own health, emergent relations in the family and/or at work, apprehension of the future, and search for meaning of life. The women with pessimistic reflections were characterized by younger age; higher indices of anxiety, alexithymia, menopausal index; low level of stress resistance and real subjective well-being. In women with non-psychotic mental disorders aged 40-65 years presenting pessimistic reflections the following indicators of suicide risk may be distinguished: situational; emotional; cognitive; and more seldom behavioral.

CONCLUSIONS. Identifying the pessimistic reflections in women living through the period of age transformations is necessary for their timely diagnostics in the structure of the female mental health and for the provision of psychotherapeutic care to prevent autodestructive behavior and to heighten the quality of life. © 2022, Professionalnye Izdaniya.
