Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Hemodialysis can be considered a risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders, after all, the dependence on this treatment requires drastic changes in the patients' routine, causing psychosocial, financial, and professional difficulties. To identify the prevalence of psychological symptoms in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) undergoing hemodialysis.

METHODS: This study evaluated the prevalence of anxiety, depression and risk of suicide by applying the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) questionnaire, carried out in a single step, in patients attending the Extremo Oeste Renal Clinic, in São Miguel do West.

RESULTS: Of 115 patients, only those with previous mental illness were excluded, totaling 92 evaluated. In order to minimize psychological risks, the applications were monitored by a psychologist, and those who presented psychiatric conditions were referred to the psychology service offered by the clinic. Participation in the research was voluntary, anonymous, and required the signing of the Free and Informed Consent Term (FICT). Among the results obtained, anxiety (47%) was identified as the most prevalent psychological disorder, followed by depression (37%), and finally, risk of suicide (16%). It was also found that patients with one year of hemodialysis were the ones with more psychiatric complaints, compared to those with longer dialysis time. Contributions: Therefore, based on these data, this work enables health professionals to develop approach strategies to alleviate psychological symptoms that may arise due to this renal therapy. © 2022, Centro Universitario Curitiba - UNICURITIBA.
