Abstract

This study analyzes some aspects of the letter Samaritanus Bonus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's on the care of persons in the critical and terminal phases of life, published in 2020. This document updates the teaching of the Magisterium to take into account the evolution of caregiving practices, advances in medical science, and cultural, social, and legal transformations in several countries. Among the many issues addressed in the letter, five are selected for in-depth analysis: nutrition and hydration, euthanasia and assisted suicide, conscientious objection on the part of Catholic health care providers and institutions, and the pastoral accompaniment of persons seeking euthanasia or assisted suicide. © 2022 Dominicains de la Province de Toulouse.
