Abstract

Illness representations play a key role in patients' with major depressive disorder (MDD) illness-related self-regulation. The Illness Perception Questionnaire- Mental Health (IPQ-MH) is a valuable instrument possibly capable of measuring patients' representations of depression. This study aimed to examine the factorial structure of the Greek version of the IPQ-MH in a sample of patients with MDD and assess its internal consistency, convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity. A secondary aim was to examine the associations between illness representations and depression severity, coping, emotion dysregulation, and suicide risk. One hundred and fifty-three patients with MDD (84.3% females) aged 48.31 ± 14.26 years, participated in the study. According to the results, the Structure scale of the Greek IPQ-MH displays a similar factor structure to that of the original IPQ-MH. The Identity scale measures the symptoms experienced and symptom attribution, and the Causes scale comprises four factors with minor differences from those of the original version. The Greek IPQ-MH displayed good reliability and validity. Patients' maladaptive illness representations were positively linked to depression severity, maladaptive coping, emotion dysregulation, and suicide risk. The Greek IPQ-MH is a reliable and valid instrument capable of measuring patients' representations of depression in research and clinical practice. © 2022 The Authors
