Abstract

In his edition of Raul Leal's Sodoma Divinizada, Aníbal Fernandes refers to the writer's period in Spain, namely Madrid, Toledo and Seville, in 1916 and 1917. Fernandes narrates a surprising episode he was told by Leal himself and for which he lacked evidence. Namely that Leal presented himself on stage in Madrid as a "Futurist dancer" using his "sumptuous collection of oriental pajamas." The performance by self-titled Abdali, Príncipe de la Muerte was poorly received and allegedly led to Leal's arrest. This essay proves and documents this essentially unknown episode, contextualizing it within Leal's work and the relationship he maintained with the international avant-gardes, namely with Futurism. The study also documents Leal's suicide attempt in Madrid, which was reported in the newspapers. © 2021, Brown University. All rights reserved.
