Abstract

Hair Dyeing is an ancient art. Now a days it is a routine and usual activity in majority of young people besides elderly as premature greying of hair is rapidly growing globally. Numerous brands of Hair dye chemicals are readily available in the market. One of the cheap and easily available product is "Supervasmol 33". The major component in super vasmol 33 Hair dye is ParaphenyleneDiamine. Besides dyeing of hair some people are misusing Super vasmol hair dye to attempt and to commit suicide. This study was aimed to estimate the incidence, to analyse the socio demographic profile and to determine the morbidity & mortality by supervasmol hair dye poisoning. In this prospective study, data was collected from the above institution from July 2012 to June 2014, we found that females were involved in 85.5% cases and maximum cases were from age group 21 to 30 yrs (56.6%). Poisoning by supervasmol hair dye is least observed in illiterates& graduates, where as maximum cases were observed in the subjects who are under matriculate (68.4%) Majority of the cases were observed from Middle class people (54%). Maximum number of subjects 78.9% was married. Majority of subjects belonged to rural area (52.6%) Among 76 subjects (100%), 51subjects (67.1%) had consumed due to some family problems and 12 subjects (16%) had consumed due to some mental illness. 62 subjects (81.6%) were discharged from hospital in good condition 12 subjects expired due to refractory shock (15.8%). © 2021 South India Medico-Legal Association.
