Abstract

Suicide is one of the major mental and public health problems worldwide, requiring detection and prevention efforts, especially in adolescent and young adult populations. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation and its relationship with mental health in non-consulting in school adolescents in the city of Arica, Chile. For this purpose, the relationship between suicidal ideation and depression, anxiety, stress, emotional dysregulation, and gender was analyzed using correlations. The sample included 1,083 adolescents between 12 and 20 years old. The results show that 34.5% of the young people present suicidal ideation, of which 67.5% are girls and 32.5% boys. Significant, moderate, and positive correlations were found between the studied variables and the suicidal ideation, together with a significant relation of the gender on the suicidal ideation. The results suggest the need to consider these variables to develop prevention programs in mental health. © 2021 Interciencia Association. All rights reserved.
