Abstract

Supertall buildings in Hong Kong refer to those taller than 40 storeys. Many of them are residential buildings and some are even up to 80 storeys. There are great concerns on the fire safety in supertall residential buildings. Evacuation was identified to be a key issue and will, be discussed in. this article with simple empirical, formula. A building complex with a supertall residential building is selected as an example. Empirical equations for crowd movement along staircases appeared in. the literature and will, be used to study the total evacuation time. Parameters in those equations are discussed for those supertall. buildings in the Far East. It is proposed that for such tall buildings, more evacuation exits should be provided to reduce the time required for evacuation.
