Abstract

The present work experimentally analyzed and compared the morphologies of smoke particles and dusts, aiming at the decrease of false alarms of smoke detectors caused by nuisance particles. This work is accomplished through the SEM imaging for four kinds of typical smoke particles and two standard dusts. The results of comparison on the SEM photographs of these smoke particles and dusts show that the microcosmic morphologies of the dusts are quite different from those of smoke particles, both in size and shape. It is also indicated that the dusts could be distinguished from smoke particles through their different angular distribution of scattered light based on the fire detection technology with multi-wavelength/multi-angle. In addition, the relationship between false alarms and response sensitivity of smoke detectors is also discussed.
