Abstract

What happens when In theological debates on assisted suicide theological arguments vanish and secular arguments arc taking their place? The German Federal Constitutional Court ruling of February 2020 on the professional promotion of suicide is likely to be the final nail in the coffin of Christian culture because it leads to an utterly antichristian understanding of reality and humanity. If theology abandons its divine subject and regards autonomy and self-determination not only as God-given but as God-like, it turns Christian faith into its opposite - especially when assisted suicide is undialectically considered an act of mercy or sheer freedom. Wherever Christian ethics loses the rhythm of its genuine narrative, it risks to surrender itself rather to the domain of sin than into the hands of God. Therefore, theological ethics needs the courage to spodight God as a change agent who steps in between humanity and death and reveals that Christ is the redeemer and death is not. © 2021 SCM R.Brockhaus.
