Abstract

We investigated weight loss versus temperature using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to find the thermal hazard of carbon black (Hi-Black 10, Hi-Black 50L) dusts and the nature of dust explosions with variation of the surface functional group as well as specific surface area for each particle size. Dust explosion experiments have been carried out for varying concentrations and sizes of carbon black dust using Hartman's dust explosion apparatus, which estimates dust explosions by electric ignition after dispersing by compressed air. The explosive pressure of both carbon blacks increased as the specific surface area increased. The results indicate that Hi-Black 50L whose specific surface area was there to four times greater than that of Hi-Black 10 was much more susceptible to dust explosion.
