Abstract

Karaoke is an activity in which people sing in association with any music. Such activity is highly popular in Hong Kong and Pacific Rim countries. One recent major fire in a karaoke establishment in Hong Kong caused seventeen fatalities. The fire safety design of these establishments becomes the major concern of the Hong Kong Government as well as the people. Stringent controls on the fire safety design of the establishments have been proposed. One of the controls concerns the proper design of the exit system because karaoke establishments are of high population density. This article uses a state space modeling technique in analyzing the effect of the requirements on the escape routes and discusses the additional fire safety measures for karaoke establishments.
