Abstract

Sulphuric acid is widely used as an industrial chemical, as electrolyte in lead-acid batteries and as drain cleaner. Accidental poisoning is common with sulfuric acid consumption. Also, it's usage to disfigure the face of someone is quite common. Suicidal death due to consumption of sulphuric acid is extremely uncommon and usually it has been reported in people with major depressive disorder. In the present case, a depressed person due to chronic alcoholism committed suicide by consuming sulphuric acid that was procured from an automobile battery. Postmortem examination including microscopic examination revealed necrosis of esophageal and gastric mucosa with perforation at fundus of stomach resulting in chemical peritonitis and charring of intrabdominal organs. © 2021 South India Medico-Legal Association.
