Abstract

The Netherlands is known worldwide for its early and liberal euthanasia practice. In this article we discuss the current debate in the country by looking at the three main arguments in favour of legalization in the 1990s: compassion for patients in intolerable suffering, the legal protection of doctors, and transparency and abuse prevention. To what extent has legalization led to the desired result? I conclude with some remarks that may be relevant for the current debate in Germany. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel. All rights reserved.
