Abstract

Dante, in Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, takes on the role of mortal persuader, endorsing the hero's suicidal intentions. The justification for this role becomes clear only in the Zurich edition of the epistolary novel (1816), where Dante's libertarian and suicidal Cato stands out, although the Dante-paradigm, of an ethical-civic nature, is tempered by an amorous chord going back to Petrarch. © 2021 Loffredo Editore SpA.
