Abstract

With the new legal regulation of suicide assistance in Germany the expansion of suicide prevention and the avoidance of a normalization tendency, which would inevitably result from anchoring suicide assistance in the healthcare-system, should have top priority. Contrary to concepts of low-threshold suicide assistance by physicians, it is advocated here to develop a procedural protection concept with compulsory counseling, psychiatric examination of the free will and a central approval authority in order to create transparent access to lethal substances. Violations of the due diligence obligations contained in this concept should be prosecuted by criminal law regardless of whether they are committed by individuals or euthanasia associations. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel. All rights reserved.
