Abstract

Creating and Managing a Digital Database : The Methodological and Ethical Challenges Related to the Elaboration and Sustainability of the Platform for the Analysis of Social Regulation of Suicide in Quebec. In this article, we will address the various ethical and methodological questions we were confronted with, during the development and design of a sustainable digital database of more than 250 years of history on suicide in Quebec. As part of this endeavor, we examine issues related to the collection, coding, and digitization of data, as well as questions on the protection and sharing of personal information. For example, how to normalize consideration of suicide without trivializing or encouraging it? How to speak respectfully about people who have committed suicide including those within their immediate circle? What fate should be reserved for photographs of the deceased and the settings in which they were found? Ultimately, our intent is to question our role as researchers, regarding those who took their own life and the sanctity of their final words. © The Author(s) 2021.
