Abstract

This paper introduces inco the current debate over the assisted suicide and its moral and legal aspects. The author offers a critical perspective on the recent post of three prominent theologians who plead for the affirmation of the self-determined desire for assisted suicide in diaconical institutions. Even if we approve the idea of self-determination (as the free consent of the believer to follow Gods commandments), we have to question the valuation of the desire for assisted suicide as a free and self-determined decision. Researchers describe the inner situation of suicidal persons as a a state of hopelessness and depression. This paper pleads for a trustful relationship in pastoral care: every emotion can be expressed, also the strong longing for an end of suffering, but with the intention to show alternatives to the assisted suicide and help regain hope for the last stretch of one s earthly voyage. © 2021 SCM R.Brockhaus.
