Abstract

The judgement of the German Federal Constitutional Court of February 2020 on assisted suicide has rekindled the debate over euthanasia in diaconia and church. Controversy centres on the proposal that assisted suicide be made possible in diaconic institutions. The present contribution adopts a critical position on the arguments of supporters (of assisted suicide) and explains the position of the v. Bodelschwingh foundations of Bethel. On the basis of exemplary cases it makes clear that the problem of assisted suicide must be discussed not only on the level of individual and personal ethics but also on the professional, organizational, and institutional level. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel. All rights reserved.
