Abstract

This research analyzes the historical evolution and recent trends of the occurrence and frequency of suicides in the State of Mérida, Venezuela. Two approaches, quantitative and qualitative were proposed. In the first, numerical indicators were estimated to examine and understand the behavior of suicides in the region. Professionals were interviewed to get their thinking better regarding the quantitative derivations obtained. The results indicate that between 1970-2014, Mérida had a distinctive behavior regarding the occurrence and frequency of suicides in relation to the rest of the country. Recently (2015-2018), the suicide rate in the state has increased, most likely as a consequence of the humanitarian crisis that is having Venezuela. © 2021, Universidad de Los Andes.
