Abstract

One literary influence on Virgil's depiction of the Carthaginian queen Dido in Book iv of his Aeneid is the depiction of Mark Antony at the moment of his suicide in a passage of the fragmentary poet Rabirius preserved in Seneca's treatise De beneficiis. Virgil's borrowing from Rabirius serves to illustrate part of his concern with the nature and economy of benefits and gift exchange. © 2020 Fabrizio Serra Editore. All rights reserved.
