Abstract

In cases concerning several suicidal persons and victims, a different nomenclature and interpretation of the terminology is partly used in the literature and jurisdiction. This article analyzes that concept and deals specifically with the phenomenon of the double suicide. Historical cases of double suicides are described. Legal assessments are made based on case constellations, which can be relevant in the case of a double suicide that failed on one side. The occasionally contradictory views found in the respective literature and jurisdiction are presented and methods of resolution are proposed. In addition, case constellations point to the importance of comprehensive work at the crime scene and to the timely elucidation of the motivation of the survivor or the deceased. © 2020, The Author(s).
