The sample was formed by 435 teenagers of both sexes, between 12 and 17 years who belong to private and public schools at Atlantic Department. Suicidal Ideation Scale (CES-D-IS) and the scale of family functioning (family APGAR) were used.

RESULTS: The presence of suicidal ideation in the female gender was reported as 69.7% and 30.3% associated with the male gender. A frequency of 250 (P: 57,471) was found associated with some level of Family Dysfunction in the sample. Finally, a significant positive relationship was found at (P< 0.01) bilateral levels between family functionality and the alert or risk of suicidal ideation.

CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that family dysfunction increase the risk of suicidal ideation. The role of the family as a protective factor or as a possible risk factor for disposing young people towards suicide is discussed. © 2020, Venezuelan Society of Pharmacology and Clinical and Therapeutic Pharmacology.
