Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption can cause problems and disorders of different nature. It constitutes a real public health problem because it affects a large number of people, causing pain, suffering, illness, discomfort or effects on the quality of life, years of loss of life, injury to others, as well as high costs in terms of medical or social services.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if there are depressive disorders and suicidal risk in alcoholic patients admitted to the Addiction Service at the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana.

METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 90 male patients with a diagnosis of alcohol dependence admitted to Rogelio Paredes Addiction Service at Dr. Eduardo Bernabé Ordaz Ducungé Psychiatric Hospital of Havana. Neuropsychiatry Evaluation System (SCAN) section 11, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Reasons for Living Inventory were applied.

RESULTS: Patients aged 41-50, with high school education, and without labor or marriage ties predominated. 70% of these patients suffered from depression, being minor depression and major depression the most frequent. 69% of them had a degree of suicidal risk. 12, 22% had suicidal ideation, and 15, 55% had attempted suicide.

CONCLUSIONS: Comorbidity of depressive disorders and alcohol dependence leads to a worse clinical course and more therapeutic difficulties. Alcoholism and depression were more frequently associated with suicide. © 2020. All Rights Reserved.
