Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the depression prevalence, suicide ideation and interpersonal relationships in male rehabilitation protection recipients with alcohol problems, as well as to identify the mediating effects of depression in the relation between interpersonal relationships and suicide ideation. Participants were 184 male rehabilitation protection recipients with alcohol problems. The tools used were AUDIT-K, Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire-Revised, Scale for Suicide Ideation-Beck and Beck Depression Inventory-K. The study findings were as follows. First, participants' suicide attempt rate was about 29 times higher than Korean adults'. Second, interpersonal relationships and depression had a direct influence on suicidal ideation. Third, depression played a partial mediating role in interpersonal relationships and suicidal ideation. Our findings suggest that interventions considering both interpersonal relationships and depression are necessary to prevent suicide ideation in male rehabilitation protection recipients with alcohol problems. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2020.
