Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Suicide has been a major cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years. The data reveals that these records have grown among university students, with an emphasis on the increasing rate among medical students.

AIM: Given the relevance of the theme, the present study aimed to assess the prevalence of suicidal ideation, as well as to specifically analyzed the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in medical students from a private higher education institution in the city of Salvador - BA.

METHODology: A cross-sectional study was carried out with medical students from the first to the eighth semesters, through the application of Beck's anxiety and depression questionnaires and the Beck scale for suicidal ideation through the Google Forms Platform. The data were organized in Microsoft Excel® and tabulated through the SPSS 20 Statistical Analysis Program and the Square Chi Test was applied for data analysis that was represented by a table.

RESULTS: Among the 331 students: the majority were women, between 20-29 years of age, single. 48.9% of students declared themselves white, 47.4% black / brown and 3.6% others. It was estimated that 4.83% students had suicidal ideation. Of these, 5 (31.2%) had no anxiety symptoms, 5 (31.2%) mild to moderate and 6 (37.5%) severe. As for depressive symptoms, 11 (68.7%) were severe, 5 (31.2%) mild-moderate and none at all.

CONCLUSION: It was demonstrated the existence of suicidal ideation in addition to anxious and depressive symptoms in the population studied. These results denote the need for medical and educational monitoring in medical training. © 2020 Editora Cientifica Nacional Ltda. All rights reserved.
