Abstract

The denial of subjectivity resulting from inequalities provokes in the young students' feelings of existential emptiness that can lead to acts of violence against themselves. The phenomena of physical self-injury and suicide are expressions of a social pain that cannot be channeled through other channels. This paper presents a series of results of a socio-educational research whose purpose is to understand the social construction of emotions in school life and its relationships with the production of violence. Based on in-depth interviews, the student perspective is interpreted in order to identify and characterize the problems related to the practices of suicide and self-harm. By increasing the recurrence among the young population and going through the school plot, these phenomena begin to occupy a prominent place in the public policy agenda and in the elaboration of strategies aimed at socio-educational intervention. © 2019 Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso.
