Abstract

We aimed to assess subjective quality of life (Qol) among elderly patients with schizophrenia compared to younger adults, and to determine clinical and therapeutic factors that impact their Qol. This cross-sectional, comparative study was conducted on 77 patients with schizophrenia (Group A: n = 47, age ≤ 40 years, Group B: n = 30, age ≥ 60 years). Older schizophrenic patients had significantly more impaired QoL in the physical and psychological health domains. These domains were negatively correlated with number of relapses and scores on the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS), and they were significantly more impaired among older schizophrenic patients with depression. Depression and severity of schizophrenia in the elderly should be therapeutic targets to improve the Qol of these patients. © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS
