Abstract

The notification of suicide attempts is compulsory in Brazil, due to its characterization as a form of violence. However, a large underreporting of cases is observed, which is due to non-filling in of the Interpersonal/Self-Provoked Violence Notification Forms. As long as hospital emergencies units are the main reception sites for persons who attempted suicide, the aim of this article was to compare the number of such attempts during a four-month period in a tertiary hospital in the Plano Piloto, Brasília, retrieving data on suicide attempts in the Federal District of Brazil, registered during 2015. The comparison showed a consistent underreporting of data on self-extermination attempts in the Federal District along these two years and that reveals, considering the contrast between the number of suicide deaths and suicide attempts in the same year, non-compliance with the mandatory notification of such cases by professionals in charge of filling in these documents. In addition, underreporting of suicidal behavior demonstrates non-adherence to the National Guidelines for Suicide Prevention. © 2019 Universidade Federal do Parana - Departamento de Psicologia.
