Abstract

Suicide is a leading cause of death in many nations around the world. Despite increased awareness of depression and suicidality in adolescents, specific groups continue to be affected by this growing health problem. In this article, the authors review literature and statistics surrounding suicide in adolescents and young adults. Specifically, we examine the epidemiology of suicide in adolescents; highlight protective and risk factors and warning signs of adolescent suicide; explore the roles of technology, prevention programming, and screening tools for youth who are at risk; and discuss treatment modalities for this patient population. © 2019 SLACK Incorporated.
