Abstract

Sec. 217 of the German Penal Code does not apply to someone aiding another person's voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED, 'fasting to death'). At the same time, however, the characteristics which exclude the punishability mean that this behavioural option has only a limited scope of application and cannot defuse the basic conflict over the admissability of assisted suicide and euthanasia. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel.All rights reserved.
