Abstract

Isotretinoin is a systemic retinoid whose achievements in acne vulgaris have been reported worldwide since 1979 and has been available on the commerce since 1982. Controversies that highlighted the putative role of isotretinoin were depression and suicide, inflammatory bowel disease and prevention of pregnancy, which has influenced since then to mythify this useful drug to this day. Multiple controlled studies suggest a very favorable effect of isotretinoin on depression and anxiety; so common in the vast population that requires it. Its dosage has been modified over time and has, above all, weighted the decrease in expected and reversible side effects. The actual incidence of association with serious side effects is surprisingly low. The future and main challenge is the socio-medical construction, the best pregnancy prevention program and the proper medical-legal control to issue the prescriptions. © 2019 Comunicaciones Cientificas Mexicanas S.A. de C.V..
