Abstract

Some college and university campuses offer safe ride programs to help reduce alcohol-impaired driving among college students. Such programs provide transportation for students from local bars and restaurants to campus-area housing. This article describes the safe ride program at Midwestern University (MU); established in 2001, the Midnight Special was part of a larger network of expanded transportation services. The authors conducted a preliminary assessment of the bus service. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, information was sought regarding the use of the service, perceptions of the value of the service from key stakeholders, and insight on how the service contributes to the campus environment and student culture. The authors conclude that the preliminary findings show the Midnight Special to be a safe ride program and a program that is valued for serving those who drink and want to travel to and from bars. While most stakeholders perceive the program positively as ensuring safe transportation, it is perceived by some as condoning drinking. This service, while having its flaws, provides one safe and convenient way to combat the fallout from college student drinking and should be only one part of an overall approach to dealing with drinking on college campuses.
