Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of the epidemiological profile of exogenous intoxications in the municipality of Moreno, State of Pernambuco, from 2012 to 2015. A descriptive epidemiological study was carried out to analyze the age, sex, type of toxic agent, use of pesticides and reasons for exposure of individuals affected by exogenous poisonings recorded in the Notification of Injury Information System (Sinan), belonging to the Ministry of Health. A total of 109 cases of exogenous intoxication were reported in the period between 2012 and 2015, with the highest frequencies found in adults (51.1%), and the main toxic agents were medication (41.3%) and agricultural chemicals (12%). In 94.5% of cases, the pesticide used was not reported. Of the 133 cases of exogenous intoxication, 37 (33.9%) occurred due to suicide attempt. The data analyzed allow us to conclude that the quantitative data in blank on the notification sheets makes it difficult to develop strategies for the prevention of poisoning by Health Surveillance, as well as the institution of specific treatments by Primary Health Care for intoxicated patients. © 2019, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco.
