Abstract

Child psychiatric emergency is defined as a condition of sufficient psychiatric distress in a child where he, his family, or guardian feel incapable of handling for even a few hours. Psychiatric emergencies and mental health concerns account for 3.5% of all pediatric hospital emergency department visits. The most common mental health problems that present to the pediatric emergency department in Western countries are substance abuse, overdoses, suicide behaviors and mood disorders, anxiety disorders and behavioral disorders. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death in adolescents and suicidal ideation and behavior have significantly increased in children and adolescents. Despite its high prevalence and knowledge on risk factors, suicidal behavior in many children and adolescents is often undetected by parents, teachers and health care providers. © 2019, Ediciones Ergon SA.
