Abstract

The Anglo-French writer Renée Vivien (Pauline Tarn, 1877-1909) is best remembered for her poetry and her use of classical (Hellenic) culture for inspiration, but there are also many traces of Asian influence in her work. This article uses the genre of the miniature sculpture netsukéand one short story in particular to illustrate this. "Le suicide officiel de Matsoudaïra Oki no Kami," published under the pseudonym Paule Riversdale, foregrounds the role of screens in hiding unpleasantness just as Pauline Tarn deploys narrative screens in a similar way to keep her personal identity and her authorial personae separate. © 2019 Southern Illinois University.
