Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the causes of death of patients with leprosy in Gugangyuan city since 1990.

METHODS: Descriptive analysis were made in the group of dead patients with leprosy.

RESULTS: One hundred and thirteen (68 males and 45 females) patients with leprosy died since 1990. Of them, 31 died during the period of combined chemotherapy and 82 (72.57%) died during the monitoring period. The average age of death was 54.47 years old, the age ranged from 29 to 78 years old and the age peak of death was from 50 to 70 with constituent ratio of 69.91%. Of 113 dead patients, 89 (78.76%) were diagnoses with multibacillary leprosy and 24 (21.24%) were were diagnosed with paucibacillary leprosy. The first three causes of death included 28 cases with malignant tumors, 22 cases with organ failure and 17 cases with suicide.

CONCLUSION: The average age of death of 113 leprosy patients was lower than the national average age of death. Malignant tumors, organ failure and suicide were the main causes of death of patients with leprosy in Guangyuan City. © 2019 Shandong Yinbao Technology Co. Ltd. All rights reserved.
