Abstract

Envenom otherwise called as poisoning is becoming a pestilence worldwide. It is the reason for premature mortality for about 800,000 throughout the world, this tragedy which affects the families, communities and entire country also. The study aims at analysing the pattern, cause, mortality rate of poisoning and treatment of poisoning in East Godavari district which is in Andhra Pradesh, India. This retrospective hospital record-based study was conducted in two tertiary care hospitals attached to teaching institution in East Godavari district. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics.A total of 285 cases were included in our study. Male to female ratio was 11:8. The age range from 4-78 years. The main occupation was manual labour 27.02% and farmers 25.96%. Rural residence was about 70.05%. The agents used for envenom are Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) 35.79%. The OPC patients were treated with Atropine 10.88%, Atropine + Pralidoxime 15.44%, Atropine + activated charcoal 13.63% and Atropine + Pralidoxime + activated charcoal 7.02% mainly. Only 3% population was accidental poisoning. Imposing stringent rules and regulations against the use of pesticides and Pharmaceutical products.
