Abstract

Though in Hobbes's philosophy suicide is not extensively discussed, it is reasonably possible to trace some evidences for justifying rational suicide. This topic appears interesting for at least two reasons. On one hand, a moral justification of suicide could seem inconsistent with the fear of violent death, which is a crucial Hobbesian idea; therefore, I will try to show how suicide could be consistently framed in the theory of deliberation and in the "Hobbesian theory of rights", argued by Eleanor Curran. On the other hand, it could be helpful to trace in Hobbes an embryonic foundation of some aspects, such as decriminalization and self-ownership, now regarded as important issues in current ethical debate on suicide. © 2019, Tipolito Subalpina.
