Abstract

Our sample included New York City public high school students of Dominican, Mexican, and Puerto Rican descent as well as a White non-Hispanic reference population (N=3,951). We used latent class analysis and identified two subtypes of students that have a high likelihood for suicide attempts based upon their depressed mood and problem behaviors (e.g., substance use and violence): depressed-internalizing youth and high-problem-behavior youth. We found no differences between the Dominican, Mexican, and Puerto Rican students for these at-risk subtypes. However, Dominican, Mexican, and Puerto Rican students were disproportionately more likely to belong to these two subtypes than their White counterparts. © 2018, Hunter College Center for Puerto Rican Studies.
