Abstract

This paper considers suicidal behavior (presence of suicidal thoughts, self-harm, attempted and executed suicide) among prison inmates in Serbia, investigating the causes of such behavior conditioned by incarceration and the specific conditions of the prison environment. It draws upon secondary literature while analyzing "The Report on Prisons in Serbia" issued by the Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions. It has been found that the insufficiently developed and dysfunctional formal system significantly affects the prison community and the mental health of inmates. Therefore, formal support, which implies a more agreeable prison atmosphere and culture, good communication and cooperation between staff and convicts and various suicide prevention programs, could reduce the high rates of suicidal behavior. © 2018, Sociological Association of Serbia.
