Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Mexican Social Security Institute promotes a Mental Health program and suicide prevention strategies. The objective was to identify the frecuency of suicide attempts (SA) in Secondary Medical Units. Material and methods: Retrospective study of 6 months (July to december 2016), identifies delegation and medical unit, gender, age, SA mechanism, monthly frequency and number by geographic regions and month of the year. It applies difference independent means accepting a value of p<0.05.

RESULTS: 1,362 SI in 69% female and 31% male; 16% <18 years, 79% from 19 to 60 years and 5% were >60. The most frequent of SA delegations were Jalisco (233), Estado de México Oriente (168) and Chihuahua (126); those of smaller Durango (1), Veracruz Norte (1) and Nayarit (1). The northwestern region presented 515 events, center 222, northeast 370 and southeast center 255, p=ns. The frequency of SA was 227/month. The SA mechanism was drug intake 78%, self-mutilation 13% and asphyxiation by hanging 4%. 54 consumptive trials were performed in 15 females (28%) and 39 males (72%) p<0.05, most frequently in the 18 to 55 age groups (prom: 32.5) and 14 to 52 (prom: 24.8), respectively.
