Abstract

This article describes the development, distribution and usage of drive video recorders in Japan. The recorders can record driving data as well as video images for the period preceding and following an accident. These kinds of capabilities have resulted in an estimated 20% of taxis in Japan being equipped with onboard drive video recorders. The article discusses the use of the data and its effectiveness. It notes that there is a need for improved reliability, additional functionalities, more sophisticated data analysis software and integration with other onboard devices. The outlook for the future indicates further diffusion of the recorders among commercial as well as private vehicles.
