Abstract

Appraising psychic suffering is a complex question, as we do not all share the same sensibility faced with a given situation, or the same social or psychic resources. More particularly, it is important to distinguish suffering, in which the individual is still capable of mustering psychic resources, from pain, which may destroy the individual and lead them to commit suicide. Such appraisal should also include the idea of reparation, not in the sense of restitutio ad integrum, but rather in the form of a psychotherapeutic process enabling the individual to recover the necessary resources to go on living. © 2018 Esprit.
