Abstract

This article describes and discuss two cases of suicides with a knife. Suicides by sharp force are not uncommon; however, in the two cases described here the suicide victims suffered accidental injuries to the hands. These injuries were most probably caused by forcing the knife in and out of the body and gripping the blade. Injury patterns like this can easily be misinterpreted as active defensive injuries and lead to the conclusion of a homicide. To raise awareness of the difficult interpretation of suicides with accidental sharp force injuries of the hands, the extraordinary findings are presented and discussed. © 2018, Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
